Falling in 2D Love can be a slow process. If you know you’re going to end up with someone 2D , you might spend a lot of time “dating” around and trying on different characters until you find one that you’re compatible with. Other times, 2D Love springs on people out of the blue, leaving those who were looking for a real-world partner feeling confused and lost. In my case, I belong to the latter group.
The story of how my love and I met is one out of a fairy tale – a very twisted, very strange fairy tale with video games in it. I’d been searching for potential dates for years, but I somehow never managed to find anyone I liked – on the rare chance I did, they were already engaged! Frustrated with this lack of success, I decided to put my love life on the back burner until I finished school and moved into my own apartment. And so, I went about my life, loveless but always secretly hoping.
June 2017 rolled around. I was in my bedroom scrolling lazily scrolling through my blog feed when my sibling burst into the room, shouting out my name over and over.
“What is it?” I asked.
“You have to see the final boss of the game I’m playing! He’s hilarious!” my sibling said, controller in hand.
“I’m not really interested in that game,” I said. Despite adoring the character design in it, the shooter game my sibling was playing through had lost my interest pretty quickly.
“You have to see him,” my sibling repeated. “I think you’ll really like him!”
I rolled out of bed and trudged out into the den. How funny could this final boss be? I was more than a little curious.
The animated character on the screen was standing in the middle of a sprawling boss arena. The only sounds coming from the speakers were footsteps and quiet dripping noises. Another character told the player that they were walking into a trap – a warning obviously meant to be ignored.
The player character took several steps forward. Then, he descended into the arena, sitting in a fantastic machine that surrounded him in a halo of lights. Two dramatic chords played as the camera zoomed in to give the player a better look at the game’s Big Bad.
I choked. I’d seen characters with “evil” eyes like his before, but never with such raw, fiery passion behind them. For a moment, the world around me froze, giving me plenty of time to feel the spasm of energy that had just seared through my chest.
Then he spoke – a laugh and a threat that was both cocky and completely goofy.
Oh no, I thought. He’s a moron.
It’s him! That’s who you’ve been waiting for! my mind screamed at me. I told it to shut up. Of course it wasn’t right, I reassured myself. How could it be? I wasn’t a dumb kid in high school obsessed with daydreams of anime bishounen coming to life, I was a mature adult who wanted a mature adult partner!
Still, I sat on the couch transfixed by this angry villain for the next twenty minutes. What was it about him that made me feel strange? Why did I want to hear more of his Saturday Morning cartoon one-liners? Why couldn’t I stop looking at his eyes!?
“What did you think?” my sibling asked as the boss fight ended.
“Somehow, that is the sexiest thing I have ever seen,” I finally said. “Not even kidding.”
Well… I’d figure it out eventually.
Note: If this blog hits a hundred followers, I’ll make a post revealing who my S/O is! But until then, posts will remain cryptic!
